PREVENT CHIMNEY FIRES
The most frequent callout we receive in the winter is for chimney fires. We average four a year. You can prevent chimney fires by:
Getting your chimney cleaned by a professional annually.
Getting your chimney cleaned by a professional if you are the new owner of a house. A Wett inspection does not inform you if you chimney needs cleaning. (Chimney fires in homes that have just changed hands occurs often)
Burning only clean, dry, seasoned wood. Wet wood creates creosote build-up
Ensuring your fire is briskly burning and hot. Smoldering wood creates creosote build-up
Ensuring your fire has sufficient airflow
NOT burning artificial logs

SPACE HEATER SAFETY
Ensure you are following all of the Space Heater rules:
Keep your space heater 3 feet away from anything that could burn
Plug your space heater directly into the outlet. Do not use an extension chord or power bar
Place your space heater on a level, flat surface
Ensure the chord of your space heater is in good condition
Buy a new space heater. The new ones have tip-over safety features. It shuts the unit down if it is not in the upright position
Never leave your space heater unattended. And do NOT leave it running while you sleep

PREVENT GREASE FIRES
Water does not put out a grease fire! If one starts in your home, hereβs what does:
If the fire starts in a pan: put on an oven mitt and smother the flames with the lid of the pan or a cookie sheet
Turn off the burner and leave the lid or cover on the pan until it is completely cool
Moving the pan can cause the grease to splash and add oxygen to the flame
Do not use a fire extinguisher on a pan fire. It can spray the burning grease around the kitchen, spreading the fire and causing burns
If you canβt safely contain the flames, alert everyone in the house, get outside and call 9-1-1
